Reasons for switching from Adobe Muse

Reasons for switching from Adobe Muse

Adobe Muse was created on May 7, 2012, with more than fifteen releases since then. Adobe Muse is a website builder that allows designers to create fixed, fluid, and adaptive websites without having to write any code. The keyword here is “designers”. Adobe Muse was created obviously by Adobe to solve and simplify the web for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices prior to most people even thinking of tablet and mobile devices. Adobe was beyond ahead of the curve with their proprietary solution. It was fast and still is. Muse utilized custom widgets from an online store to make it simple for graphic designers to create websites (e.g. no nerd required).

Adobe has had a long history of proprietary products that eventually die. In fact, all software eventually dies. Just if you want to kill off a product sooner rather than later it seems Adobe has a good handle on that. Being publicly traded I can understand that as it’s all about the money rather than serving customers. I can except that. If Adobe Muse was a cash cow like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator I am sure it wouldn’t be going away. From a technology standpoint, I see Adobe Muse as fundamentally awesome yet flawed at the same time. It is not our point here of deciding that. I just want to list the major reasons for switching from Adobe Muse along with some potential “gotchas” you might run into.

  • May 20, 2021, will be the last official day Adobe Muse will be supported
    (Source: https://www.businesscatalyst.com/#faq)
    • Starting with March 26th, 2021, all sites will no longer be live
  • SEO is set to title tags, descriptions, and keywords with no structured META data for social media
    • Note: Keywords are no longer used by the search engines
  • No simple migration path (complete re-writes are required) as the MUSE code is not fully HTML5/CSS3 compliant which is what all modern content management systems (CMS) use
  • You can no longer buy the Adobe Muse software which was one option of keeping your website updated past the March 26, 2021 date. If you have already purchased the physical (not monthly subscription) you can still use Adobe Muse past March 26, 2021.
  • You can no longer use “test servers” provided by Adobe as of August 27, 2018
  • Ability to edit through the web browser will no longer work at all. You will only be able to edit your site using HTML (code).

Minor

  • Both a blessing and a curse. Muse sites lock you into modifying the text/images in predefined layouts. This helps eliminate people breaking a site but also restricts on the future growth and expansion of a site.

Important but easily corrected

  • Most Muse web hosts do not do daily backups. Being Muse sites are not changed often this can be done manually or backup added to a hosting plan.
  • Most Muse websites are not monitored for being hacked. They are set and forgotten about. Monitoring for text changes and server changes are easily added.
  • Most on Muse will use @gmail.com, @outlook.com, @yahoo.com, etc. email addresses and not branded to their domain providing a branded email address that matches their domain.

Not all is bleak

If you Adobe Muse is not hosted on Adobe your site will still be running and your customers will not know you are running on software that is no longer used or supported. You just will only be able to edit your website using straight HTML (code).

Conclusion

Even with all this “oh my”, “the world is ending”, etc. you are still oaky. The key is fixing the problem sooner rather than waiting to the last minute. When you wait and have to rush your prices are almost always going to be higher. By addressing migrating from Adobe Muse sooner you can not only upgrade and get out of this crisis but also do some refresh and optimizations for the latest search engine and web technologies. We, JM2 Webdesigners & Marketing, have been migrating Muse sites to HTML5/CSS3 industry standard websites since Adobe announced the end-of-life of the product. What we’ve seen from these migrations is companies taking better advantage, taking more pride in their websites, and increasing their digital marketing experience for their customers. If you are ready to migrate your Adobe Muse site let us know. Many times we are done within one week and the site will actually perform better than it does under Muse with more control to you, the business owner.
